Do to others as you would have them do to… your dad.
Would you allow your father to have eye surgery in a van?
Not only allow it, but encourage it? Could you say, “I’m absolutely confident in this service”?
Dr. Qureshi so strongly stands behind the programs that you and supporters like you are funding that he asked his father to have both eyes operated on in one of cbm’s projects. And even though this particular project had an operating room in a hospital, he suggested his dad’s surgery take place in a mobile van that was renovated into an operating room.
His father had one eye done… then the other. And… his eyes are absolutely fine. Just as Dr. Qureshi had promised.
Dr. Qureshi said, “For me, the quality… is key to our program. And I have a very simple question that I ask at every program cbm funds. I always ask… “Can I take my father to this particular project and allow him to be operated on?”
Dr. Qureshi’s benchmark for excellence is why cbm donors can have confidence that their donations will have long-term impact in some of the world’s poorest communities.
His passion for eye health started when he was in his third year of medical school in Nigeria. He was assisting a PhD student who was studying the fly that causes River Blindness.
Dr. Qureshi said, “That is when it struck me that in village after village I was seeing blind adults, one after the other. It was devastating to see hundreds of thousands of blind people. I came back and decided that I was going to be an ophthalmologist.”
After treating patients for 13 years he felt that it seemed like serving one patient at a time wasn’t good enough.
He remembers his teacher and mentor, Dr. Pararajasaegram, say, “If you have the knowledge and the power to cure and treat, and if you don’t do anything, then you are responsible not only for the things that you do, but the things that you don’t.”
This is why he has made it his life goal to bring eye care to some of the poorest countries in the world. Yet his massive dreams of eradicating preventable blindness or seeing even the world’s poorest people access quality health care cannot be achieved with his own hard work.
Dr. Qureshi’s life goals are becoming a reality because generous donors like you around the world believe and give through donations and prayers.[/vc_column_text]
